We participated in this year’s Transport Research Arena, TRA 2024, held in Dublin from April 15th to 18th. The event brought together over 4000 attendees from various transportation sectors, including road, rail, aviation, water, and cross-logistics industries. Serving as Europe’s leading dissemination and networking platform, TRA facilitates discussions among innovators, industry experts, policymakers, and operators to address the future of transport and mobility, promoting solutions for enhanced efficiency, safety, carbon neutrality, accessibility, and resilience across all modes.
Dr. Maria Antoniou contributed through an oral presentation focusing on the transport investment planning and analysis tool developed by Grid Engineers. This tool aims to facilitate strategic climate resilience investment planning by integrating dynamic traffic analysis, probabilistic hazard mapping, and multiple infrastructure damage and recovery models.
During the presentation, Dr. Antoniou highlighted the tool’s pilot applications in South Asia, completed in the framework of a recent assignment by the World Bank. Emphasizing the tool’s scalability and versatility, she showcased insights from various applications not only in South Asia but also in Africa and the US. The presentation concluded with a summary of cost-benefit assessments of different investment strategies for road network upgrades across the world. The results revealed very encouraging benefit-over-cost ratios and investment returns, advocating the business case for resilience, and demonstrating that resilience is not an additional cost but rather an investment that makes economic sense and generates returns.
