Development of a Support Platform for Engineering Decisions: Application to Highways

We were hired by a major infrastructure consultant to design a platform that could be integrated in Asset Management Systems to support resilience-related decisions. The Platform includes 4 interacting modules: : an ‘Initialization Module’ that retrieves information about the highway assets and their condition; an ‘External Environment Module’ that is activated whenever an external event (that may possibly impact highway assets) is detected or whenever updated inspection data are available; a ‘Processing Engine’ that gets input from the previous modules and outputs expected damage and loss estimates, and finally a ‘Decision Module’ that aims to facilitate highway operators to prioritize actions before, during and in the aftermath of a low-probability and high-impact event.
